Ahhhh, sleep. Love it. Back in the high school and college days, I could sleep away half the day no problem. If there was such a thing as an Olympic Sleep Team, I would have been a lock for a gold medal. But then reality and life set in. While those sleep days are long gone, I still try to get 7-8 hours a night. Not just because I like it, but because I NEED it. While it's true you can get by with less sleep, it is not healthy for your mind and body and definitely robs you of productivity during your waking hours. The average American sleeps 6.5 hours.
Too bad our culture celebrates sleep deprivation: "I can sleep when I'm dead." "As long as I get my coffee, I'm fine." "Sleep is for suckers." I never bought into that and don't ever plan to. Of course, to maximize productivity, you really need to combine adequate sleep with other good life habits such as eating healthy and regular exercise. But for now, let's focus on the sleep. Try a few of these articles on for size. Some good info in Harvard Business Review, New York Times, and WorkAwesome. I'm tired just thinking about this topic. I think I'll go take a nap.
