Passion Without Obsession

There are a few lucky ones out there who know exactly where their passions lie.  Let's say they have a genuine love for something, become great at it, and may even make a living at it.  Does that sound like you?  If so, kudos to you.  Consider yourself blessed.  Many people never find their passion or even look for it in the first place.  However, be very careful to not let that blessing turn into a curse.  This is a very easy trap to fall into.

If you want to go "all-in" on your passion, don't take that decision lightly.  Figure out beforehand what effect that may have on all other aspects of your life.  Will you become an absentee parent/spouse/friend?  Will you drain your savings?  Will stress crush you?  Or worse yet, will your passion become an obsession and make you into "not you"?

Anything that is allowed to take over your life will have a net negative effect on your life.  This can be infinitely harder to detect when it relates to a passion (something generally viewed as a positive in our lives).  If that obsession was something like drugs, alcohol, or gambling, it'd be a whole lot easier for family and friends to help identify and begin to correct.  But, something more subtle like workaholism generally won't have your loved ones clamoring for an intervention.

I don't have any magic pill to identify or avoid obsessive passion.  However, just being self-aware and taking a moment to reflect on this possibility in your life will likely give you a leg up on the rest of the masses.
