Work-Life Balance. It's Really about Choices.

Work-life balance is not easy.  It's not a myth either.  What it really boils down to is choices.  Just like anything in life, your choices define your past, present, and future.  You own your life.  How you set priorities for your life will dictate how your work-life situation will look.

Anne Egros depicts this process of prioritization through the Wheel of Life.  I love this visualization.  Plus, my car wouldn't make it a mile down the road if my tires were in the same shape as my Wheel of Life!

Judy Martin also makes a great point that in order to begin to get any semblance of work-life balance, you have to want it.  If you choose to work yourself to death in pursuit of the C-level title and corner office, don't be surprised when other areas of your life suffer.  If you choose to focus excessively in one area, you can't expect to thrive in other areas.  There are only so many hours in a day and your goals and choices will dictate your level of work-life balance.  If you don't truly want balance, don't expect it to magically appear.

Even when I read some articles that say work-life balance is a myth, they still talk about it coming down to choices we make.  Dana Theus discusses work-life baloney saying it's not a balancing act, it's just life.  But then she goes on to say we live life based on the sum total of all the choices we make along the way.

Bottom line is to identify what's important in your life and begin to prioritize accordingly.
